"Do not worry about it," replied Squire Ch'ai Chin. "Let us send for the best doctors, and see whether they cannot cure my uncle. I will send a man to my home to bring the imperial iron tablet here, and then I will discuss matters with the officials. We need not be afraid of these local mandarins when I have that tablet."

After attending to his uncle's requirements Squire Ch'ai Chin went to the guest room, and explained the position to Li K'wei and the men.

Li K'wei was very angry on this and said, "These fellows are unreasonable. But I will go and ask them to bite my ax, and after that we can discuss matters with them."

"Don't be so stupid," replied Squire Ch'ai Chin. "This official has great influence, but when I show him my imperial tablet, if he will not listen to me, then I may go to the capital, and lay the case before the highest official."

"Laws! Laws!" said Li K'wei. "At the present time laws are of no use in our country. Better fight and discuss afterwards. Then if these fellows appeal to the mandarins against us we shall chop off the heads of the mandarins themselves."

Squire Ch'ai Chin laughed, "You should not forget that you cannot meet Chu Tung because he wants to fight with you. But still you must remember in this city you cannot act as you wish as you were on the mountain stronghold."

"What difference does this city make? When I was in Chiang Chou did I not kill many men there?"
